PT Foundation reported that there will be a HIV carrier in every
10 MSM, "man who have sex with man", based on survey from
500 MSM in Kuala Lumpur.
MSM is different from gay or homosexual because they have sex with
man but they also have sex with women.
Most of the MSM are married or already have girl friends. More
than half of them did not wear condom when having sex. It is possibility
that they will transmit HIV to their partners or wife.

HIV/AIDS cases have increased in tandem with the number of drug
addicts in the country.
As of June 2007, Malaysia has registered a total of 78,784 HIV
cases, 13,121 AIDS patients and 9,586 had died because of the disease.
On average, there will be 13 new HIV cases reported everyday.
Based on a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, 95% of the
HIV carriers are below the age of 39. The number of women and educated
HIV carriers has increased, and 70% of these people still have active
sex activities.
80% of the drug addicts were infected because they did not protect
themselves with a condom.
WHO forecasts that Malaysia will have 30,000 AIDS cases by 2015
if the country can't control the disease effectively.

Miserable "one night love". Many educated women thought
that "one night love" will not give adverse consequences
to them but many were infected by HIV without realizing it.
According to General Director of Ministry of Health, Tan Sri Ismail,
more educated or professional women were infected by HIV through
"one night love" with strangers. In the past, women HIV
patients were largely house wives but now they are accountant, lawyer,
engineer, doctor and teacher.
Statistics from the Ministry of Health revealed that women HIV
carriers had increased 250% but no detail on education background
was given.
In Malaysia, there are 19 new HIV cases everyday and out of these,
2 are women.

Prof Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, president of the Malaysian Aids Council
and chairman of the board of the Malaysian Aids Foundation indicated
that youngsters aged between 15 and 25 are the highest risk group
exposed to HIV.
This group of people are unaware of the risk of this dread disease
and they have to be fed with the relevant information.
Statistics from the Ministry of Health, December last year showed
that the number of HIV cases had incresed to 78,000 and the actual
number could be 3 times more.

The outcome of this survey is shocking but they are real facts
revealed by a research carried out by UiTM, based on samples from
sudents aged between 18 and 25 from two private universities and
two national universties.

Muslim couples in all States will soon have to undergo compulsory
HIV/AIDS screening before they can marry.
Selangor is the latest to join Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Johor,
Perlis, Kedah and Pahang in agreeing to have compulsory HIV/AIDS
screening.
The Health Ministry and the World Health Organisation had projected
that there would be more than 300,000 Malaysians with HIV/AIDS by
2015.
At present, the figure stands at 71,676. It is also estimated that
more tahn 6,000 people would be infected with AIDS annually, unless
effective measures are taken to address the problem.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health revealed that a total of
444 government servants had been infected by HIV whilst 120 were
confirmed AIDS last year.
On average, three patients died of AIDS and an increase of 18 new
HIV patients everyday. AIDS has become a main killer in the country
where 984 people died from AIDS in 2005.
Todate, a total of 8,179 had died from AIDS. Meanwhile, the government
will review the proposal to distribute free needles and condoms
after 31 December 2006.

Prof Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman took over from Datuk Paduka Marina
Mahathir as president of the Malaysian Aids Council and chairman
of the board of the Malaysian Aids Foundation.
She says the AIDS statistics in the country are alarming. Here
are some facts and figures about the disease:
- Recorded deaths from AIDS between 1986 and 2005 amounted to 7,673.
- During the period, there were 62,597 reported HIV-infected cases
and 10,044 AIDS cases.
- In terms of ethnicity, the breakdown of reported cases can be
divided into Malays (73%), Chinese (15%), Indians (8%).
- In terms of occupation, odd job workers made up 33% of the cases,
while the unemployed made up 18%. Fishermen, factory workers and
drivers made up 11%.
"Giving out condoms doesn't mean we are encouraging pre-marital
sex. Make no mistake, we are not saying it's right, sex before marriage.
What we are saying is that if people are going to do it anyway,
please use a condom.
I personally do not think that it is morally right to let thousands
of people be infected and die from HIV/AIDS, given that we know
what preventions strategies work and the only reason that we are
not doing it is because of the perceived immorality associated with
it." said Adeeba.

Most of the women AIDS/HIV cases reported in the country are house
wives. The Malaysian AIDS Council had recently revealed a shocking
statistic that 1,628 house wives were infected by the virus compared
to 406 were prostitutes.
From the period of 1986 to June 2006, a total of 4,841 women AIDS/HIV
cases were reported where 582 had died from AIDS. At the same time,
the number of reported women cases had increased from 0.9% in 1994
to 7% in 2004.

worldwide and today, there are about 40 millions people confirmed
to be infected by the deadly virus.
In Malaysia, as of June 2005, a total of 67,528 AIDS/HIV cases
have been reported since 1986.

Why Use Condom ? The correct use of condoms is the easiest
and safest way of prevention against HIV/AIDS, STDs
and unwanted pregnancies.
Health
It is found that condoms are effective
against the transmission of HIV, gonorrhea in men and
for other STDs, such as syphilis, genital herpes.
There are about 5 million people infected
with HIV and 40 million living with AIDS / HIV worldwide.
In USA, sixty-five million people have sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs).
In China, one million people are infected
with HIV while the number of full-blown AIDS sufferers
will double to 200,000 in five years. The United Nations
has warned that the number of HIV carriers in China
could soar to more than 10 million by the end of the
decade.
According to United Nations figures,
Malaysia now has around 60,000 HIV/AIDS cases. More
than 10,000 new cases were recorded last year alone.
The reported cases in 1990 were only around 10,000 and
increased to 20,000 cases in 1995.
Recent research shows that, most of
the infected individuals do not know that they have
been infected by HIV/STDs. They are ignorant rather
than intending to hide from their partners. So, it would
be too late when a partner is found positive for HIV/STDs.
Family Planning
Education towards prevention of sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs) and pregnancy should be
given to teenagers nowadays. It is estimated that more
than 1 in 10 teenagers get pregnant each year, and the
figures are rising. If patterns do not change, this
figure could increase to one in four.
Taiwan has reported a critical illegal
abortion of around 50,000 to 80,000 cases in 2003. Of
these, about 10,000 cases were teenagers below 20 years
old.
In Malaysia, national figures show
that nearly 13,000 births by teenage girls under the
age of 19 in year 2000.
